A project management office ( PMO) is a group, team or department of core mentors of the project who defines, sets and maintains standards for project management within an organization.

A PMO is a group that coordinates different areas of a project, and maintains smooth and efficient functionality of a project.

In simple words, A PMO is a group or department that sets standards for project management and also provides support and guidance to project managers.

PMOs set some of the best practices, statuses and directions of all projects with strategic planning and governance.

What are the functions of a PMO?

  • PMOs provides guidance and support to their firm’s project managers.
  • They also define project criteria and select the projects as per business goals.
  • They also help in setting “common project culture” by training employees.
  • PMOs also manage their firm’s project history.
  • PMOs are responsible for resource allocation.
  • They also define roles and responsibilities.
  • They also look for training and mentoring to all employees.
  • PMOs inspire project leaders as well as employees.

Types of PMO :-

1. Supportive

They have a low level of control over the project, they just play consultative roles in a project such as :- providing training, lessons, best practices etc.

2. Controlling

They have a moderate level of control over the project, they provide governance and guidance support.

3. Directive

They have a high level of control over the project, project managers are assigned by these PMOs. Hence project managers report to them.

Benefits of PMO :-

  • They also helps in smooth and efficient working on projects.
  • They also reduces chances of risk or failure of a project.
  • PMOs also helps in managing firm’s past records.
  • PMOs also reduces cost.
  • They motivate and guide project managers and employees.
  • They also build strong relationships among leaders and teams.
